Carriage House Books Complete

The Salem Preservation Society’s Carriage House Book Committee is proud to announce the completion of this 72-page book. It is a beautifully illustrated full-color guide to 31 carriage houses located in all the quadrants of the city of Salem.  The book has been designed to create a lasting record of these historic structures and to serve as a guide for those interested in locating the carriage houses.  It could make a fine gift for friends and family.

The book, titled A Backyard History: The Carriage House Book is available for sale at the Historic Society Museum Gift Shop, Kolby’s, the DH Gallery, and the Flower Loft.  0ut-of-town customers may order copies by contacting the Preservation Society at P.O. Box 1034, Salem, Ohio 44460.  Books will cost $22.00 including tax.  Out of town customers will pay the cost of the book plus shipping.

This project began with a letter of encouragement and seed money from David Johnson to the Preservation Society.  The committee was formed and began work in June 2008.  Information was printed in the local newspapers.  The town was scoured to locate historic carriage houses and known owners were encouraged to share information they had about the buildings. Eighteen months later the project was complete. The finished product is largely due to the professional and artistic talents of Kristina Danklef.  Kris did the lay out for the book and acted as a professional consultant to the committee.  Keith Berger of The Graphic Touch printed the book covers.  Other committee members; Arlene Schwartz, Jean Alice Fehr, Barbara Schwab, and Charlotte Wallace worked as a cohesive unit sharing their own talents as they worked to bring this project to fruition.
