Accomplishments

Salem Preservation Society Mission Statement is to “Preserve architecturally and historically significant sites, objects, and landscapes in the Salem area, and to promote educational, artistic and cultural activities that will increase community awareness of the importance of the preservation of Salem’s heritage.”

Accomplishments:

• Received the State of Ohio Historic Preservation Award for encouraging and financially supporting the nationally known architectural “Box City Program” in the Salem City Schools. SPS supported this program from 1994 to 1998.

Donated $5,000 to Salem Renaissance Committee for the development of downtown Salem.

• Financially donated to the E. State Street Historic District

• Financed sending a Salem Art teacher to Florida to attend the “National Box City” seminar.

Published books on the history of Salem’s churches, South Lincoln Avenue Historic Homes, Salem’s Downtown Historic District and Salem’s Cemeteries.

• Contributed financially to the historically significant Quaker Sixth Street Meeting House for building maintenance.

• Conducted a one day educational seminar for teachers titled “Using Preservation in the Curriculum”.

• Maintains the “Salem Century Home Project” to plaque historic buildings in the community.

• Funded the process to get the Burchfield and Hise House on the National Register of Historical Places.

 

• Donated $1,000 to Sheppard’s Heart Foundation – a non profit organization who made block replicas of Salem’s historic buildings.

• Donated $500 to the Salem Garden Club – a non profit organization who contributed to the landscape beauty of Salem’s historic buildings.

• Donated $500 to the Salem Historic Society – a non-profit organization who educates the community on the history of Salem’s significant buildings.

• Hosted and funded the Ohio Historic Preservation Office, “ Building Dr. Seminar”

• Provided Walking Tour guides and books for Heritage Day programs of South Lincoln Avenue and Downtown.

• Donated $10,000 to the support of the Salem Story Book Museum a non profit organization that is renovating a historic structure for a museum use.

• Organized the “First Ladies Program” – a group of ladies portraying the lives of  the First Ladies.  This group provides for profit programs for non-profit organizations.

• Hosted seven “Celebration of Preservation” events to honor local property owners who have preserved a significant historic structure.

• Hosted tours to historic sites for education of reuse of buildings. Some have been to Brookville, Pa., Five Oaks Massillon Women’s Club, Science Hill School, Amish Country, Lock 6, Lock 24, Spread Eagle Tavern, Blue Bird Inn, Leetonia Coke Ovens.

• Created a Salem Downtown Plaque program and brochure for a self-guided walking tour.

• Purchased and donated preservation books, and the National Preservation Trust’s Restoration Briefs to the Salem Public Library.
